Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation - Hampton Roads, Inc

Who We Are

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundation – Hampton Roads (AKAF-HR) is a new 501(c)(3) organization, founded in June 2006 in Norfolk. AKAF–HR is a charitable organization with members living across Hampton Roads who are committed to serving those in our local neighborhoods and throughout the region. The Foundation’s mission is to serve the community by enriching and improving the lives of people living in the region through focused programs in education, economics, the family, health and the arts.

The AKAF-Hampton Roads was founded by members of Upsilon Omicron Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. which is the oldest Greek letter organization established for African American women. Its history spans from 1908 to the present with over 140,000 college trained women worldwide committed to supporting five primary areas of concern -- Education, Economic Empowerment, the Family, Health, and the Arts.

What We Do

AKAF-HR will focus on the same platforms areas as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Its members understand that when the “Heart & Hand” work together, compassion and needed services are delivered to the people in our community who need them most.

AKAF-HR’s service to the community will be an extension of what Upsilon Omicron Omega chapter has done in the past by successfully partnering with community organizations such as:

  • Bon Secours Hampton Roads
  • The Salvation Army
  • Tidewater Command
  • Drive Smart Hampton Roads
  • The American Heart Association
  • The American Diabetes Association
  • James Monroe Elementary School
  • The Coronado School
  • Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (N.E.S.T)
  • The Dwelling Place
  • Upward Bound—Norfolk State University

Our Commitment

AKAF-HR members are personally committed to its mission. Each member has contributed financially not only to the establishment of the Foundation but also to its continued success.

Join Us As A Community Partner

The Foundation welcomes the opportunity to partner with other organizations to provide programs that can improve our community. Programs that support shelters, health education, scholarships and educational initiatives such as after school programs and tutoring are valuable to all citizens. AKAF-HR focuses its efforts on these areas and continues to seek community partners in large and small corporations, health and human services agencies as well as other charitable foundations and organizations.
